Create a bonsai: class

$75.00

Looking for a fun date night, family activity, or something fun to do with friends? Come join me and create your own bonsai tree that you can bring home and enjoy for years to come!

We’ll start this activity in my backyard where I have over 100 bonsai trees of various species, sizes, and ages. I will provide something to drink and cover a brief history of bonsai and answer any questions. If it’s raining, we’ll move into the garage to stay dry.

As the first step in creating your own bonsai, you will select your tree and decide which pot you want it to go into. At a minimum, I will have Juniper and Boxwood stock available to choose from with potential additional options depending on availability. We will prepare the pot by inserting the drainage screens and anchor wires.

A standard plastic training pot is included in the price. Additional pot options will be available for purchase, which may range from $10 - $30.

Once the pot is ready to go, we will start removing the old dirt from the tree and trimming roots as necessary to situate the tree properly in the pot. This part can take a little while and you’ll get a little dirty! We’ll then anchor the tree into the pot and add a specialized bonsai soil mix in with the tree.

To finish off your new bonsai tree, we’ll get it watered, trim some branches, and shape the tree using wires as desired.

Bonsai is a wonderful combination of art and science that has been refined over hundreds of years. Keeping your tree alive and thriving will require time and attention, but I will set you up for success with hardy trees and all the instructions you need.

This class is for anyone looking for something fun to do for an afternoon or evening and anyone interested in getting into bonsai. This class will not cover any intermediate or advanced bonsai techniques, but intermediate and advanced bonsai artists are more than welcome to come.

You should expect this class to take at least an hour; that time may increase with the number of people in your group.

Please note:

The optimal time of year for creating or repotting a bonsai tree is January - April. If it is outside this time of year, I am still happy to offer the class for the experience, but please understand the risk of your new tree dying increases substantially.

Price is per person - please purchase the quantity equal to how many people will be making a tree. Additional guests or friends are welcome if they just want to watch.

Classes are typically available most weekday evenings and weekends. Weekdays are frequently available as well. Please use this link to view the exact availability for classes.
